SYNOPSIS

“Malloe” is a short story about a family of intergalactic travellers who seek to discover new species of aliens. Mum and Dad go out everyday in hope of finding alien life while the kids, Tina and Neil, stay close to their house. When one hungry alien is drawn to the delicious sugar of marshmallows, Tina’s innocent curiosity might be the key to gaining the trust of the aliens.

MY ROLE

My roles on this projects were, Director, Animator, Rigger and Environment TD. My interest falls into animation and the team only had 10 animators doing more than one role which meant that everyone was busy, so taking more than one role was essential to bring Malloe to life in 2 months. The story involved 5 characters, therefore I ended up having to rig 5 different characters, thankfully I found a 'quick' way of rigging.  As a director I was very involved in all aspects of the film, not only directing but also assisting all other departments.

UNREAL PIPELINE

We used Unreal Engine renderer to render our short film, I was in charge of building our new environment in Unreal, we used an environment from the Unreal Marketplace called, 'Stylized Autumn Forest' created by TomkaGS.   

THE RIGGING

The project had 5 different characters and we only had one rigger it being myself, having some experience rigging before I knew I had to find a quicker and effective way of rigging due to the limited time we had. From an early stage I forecasted this challenge and directed the team into making the characters as simple as possible in regards to their body structure and eyes. In the end the design allowed us to speed up the modelling and rigging process by a lot. To rig the characters I used the 'Advance Skeleton'.

ANIMATION

The Animation on Malloe was a first time experience to me, because of the stop-motion style we animated the whole short film on 2s

FINAL ENVIRONMENT

This is a screenshot from the final environment. Totally transformed I had to work with the Art Director Paloma Zhu to achieve a cohesive feel for our story's universe.
